What to expect at Church 180

Welcome to Church 180. We are glad you have dropped by to check us out online.

We understand that you may have a few questions about Church 180 in making your decision whether or not to visit in person. Here are 10 questions we are commonly asked about Church 180 services.

1. Where and when do you meet?

We meet every Sunday.  At our Newcastle Campus (The Royal), we start our services at 10am and 6pm.  At our Lakeside (Toronto) Campus, we start at 9am.

On special occasions we may change our service times, but these changes will be broadcast on this website and other media.

We also have Generation180 (youth) and Switch (young adults) programs that meet on Fridays and Saturdays.

In addition, we have Connect Groups that meet across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie that cater to all ages and interests.

2. What should I wear?

We are a contemporary church and dress in an informal manner. Our minister will not be in robes. We are more concerned about you being comfortable and relaxed than the clothes you wear. Many members of Church180 spend their working week in suits and ties and as such prefer to dress more casually on Sundays.  Of course, if you do want to wear a suit or your “Sunday best”, feel free but it is certainly not required.

3. What do you do?

We believe your relationship with God is important. While “religion” often carries a connotation of robes, holy water and a pipe organ, you will not find those at Church180.  We endeavour to present our services in a creative and fresh way that encourages you on your journey to know God.

Our services have contemporary music with a live band and relevant teaching.

If you have children, Kids180 will ensure they are well looked after and have a fun time (see question 8 below).

Once a month we celebrate holy communion. This is simply a time to remember the sacrifice of Christ.

Our services also include an opportunity to give financially, which we call tithes and offerings. Make sure you read the next question…

We also include an opportunity for anyone who would like to commit to being a Christian to do so. A Christian is simply a follower of Christ.  Please read question 7 for more in this regard.

We are also privileged to have leaders in many fields from across the globe speak at Church180 from time to time. For details see the home page of this website.

4. Do I have to give money?

Giving tithes and offerings is for those who are part of the Church180 community.

You are our guest. We want you to sit back and receive, not feel compelled to give.

When this time in the service approaches, feel free to pass the offering plate on.

5. What is the music like?

Church180 is a contemporary church with modern music.

While we value our Christian heritage which includes songs from the centuries before, we appreciate that different people like different types of music.

Our band is made up of skilled musicians and vocalists who lead Church180. You will enjoy this time in the service!

During the music time, many people will stand and sing. This is a way that some people like to express themselves. If you feel comfortable, feel free to join in or simply stay seated and just enjoy the music.

6. Do I have to do anything?

You are our valued guest. Please sit back, relax and enjoy your time with us.

During the service, we will often ask if there are any new people visiting with us. Because of the number of people in our services, it is often difficult for us to know if it is your first time. When we ask if there are new people and if you feel comfortable, all you have to do is raise you hand and one of the hosts will give you a Church180 information pack. Of course, if you would prefer not to raise your hand, that’s fine and you are able to collect an information pack from the rear of the auditorium.

Each service we endeavour to provide the opportunity for people to become Christians.  A Christian is simply a follower of Christ.  At the end of most services, we will invite anyone that would like to make this commitment to do so.  During this time, if you would like to make that commitment, we will ask that you briefly raise your hand as an acknowledgment of your commitment.  As a matter of courtesy and privacy, we ask that no one looks around or talks during this time – it is a matter between you and God.  If you do make this decision and raise your hand, the minister will pray a prayer which many others will pray also and we encourage you to join in.  If you have made that commitment for the first time, we have a team of specially trained assistants that would love to meet with you and answer any questions you may have. If you do not feel ready to make that commitment, that is fine, please enjoy yourself.

7. What about my kids?

If you have kids, we have a crèche area and Kids180.  Kids180 accommodates kids up to 12 years of age.

Our crèche is at the rear of the auditorium.  At our Newcastle Campus, there are a number of mothers and fathers with young children who are part of the Church180 community.  If you need anything, please ask one of our hosts.

If you have a young child, Kids180 offers a full kids program of games, activities and teaching.  All of our Kids180 leaders have police clearances and necessary approvals to work with children.  Our Kids180 program is run on site but in a separate room. Children are brought back for collection at the end of each service.

If you have any questions, or would like to see the Kids180 area, please ask one of our hosts and they will be glad to help.

8. How long does the service go for?

We appreciate that Sundays are a valuable day in your week.

All of our services are 1.5 hours or less.

Our Newcastle Campus morning service starts at 10am and finishes no later than 11:30am. Our Lakeside Campus morning service starts at 9am and finishes no later than 10:30am.  Our evening service, which is held at our Newcastle Campus, starts at 6pm and finishes no later than 7:30pm.

We have a tea and coffee area at the back of our auditorium and would love the opportunity to meet you in person. If you are pressed for time, just let us know your details and we will be happy to catch up with you at a time that suits you better.

In the unusual event we are required to go later than expected, please feel free to quietly leave the auditorium – we will not be offended.

9. Do I need a Bible or anything?

All you need is you!

We believe in the Bible and our ministers use it as the reference point for teaching.

If you have a Bible and would like to bring it, please feel free, but it is certainly not mandatory.

In saying that, if you do not have a Bible and would like one, please ask one of our hosts and they will give you a Bible at no cost as a momento of your visit with Church180 which we encourage you to read.

The Bible is a holy text broken into different books, with each book having different chapters and each chapter having different verses. If you have not read the Bible before, we suggest you read the book of Luke first – it is one of the four “gospels” (being Matthew, Mark, Luke & John) written describing the life of Christ.  Of course, if you would like more information, check out the “Growing with God” page under the “Grow” menu on this website.

It is our hope that your online experience will give you a taste of who we are and why we love Church180 and our community here.
